STRAIGHTAWAY

Crown`s work is rooted in the vocabulary of painting and art history, merging analog and digital strategies. It is about mapping experiences and image-making and navigating those spaces in between.

STRAIGHTAWAY comes from Crown’s process of investigating materials both natural and manufactured. The series combines organic matter and contemporary finishes in wall-mounted sculptures that vibrate between object and graphic image. Focusing on proportion, color, and material, each work is site-specific and achieves harmony and balance amidst Crown’s precise juxtapositions. Crown tunes the medium in each STRAIGHTAWAY, collaging and refining with a sensitivity to its site in order to achieve balance. Within a single piece, materials can range from specialty wood to reflective microspheres. Each artwork compresses lines of color and texture into compositions that evoke speed, movement and gesture. The work is an extension of a modernist legacy that coalesces energy into color while confidently reinterpreting its predecessors with new materials and technology. 

Site-specific commissions from this series include permanent installations at the Limelight Hotel in Ketchum, Idaho, and the Aspen Mountain Club in Aspen, Colorado and Fortune 500 Corporate Headquarters.
